Hopefully this is the correct forum for this. There is a piece of narrow wood trim at the top of the stairs from our basement which keeps starting to pull away (horizontally) from the floor, causing a gap. As the gap widens, I hammer the piece back and hammer back the existing nails, such as they are, that are holding it in (put in by the previous owner). I want to secure this piece so that it stays in place.

I assume some sort of nails are the solution, but I'm a total newbie in this area. What type of nails? What size (length, diameter)? In order not to crack the wood, should I drill holes first? What size bit?

I've included three pics: An overview, a closeup, and a side-view.

Thanks!

The only two things that come to mind right off hand is, open the crack and fill with epoxy glue. Also if it were mine I would drill a 3/8 inch wide hole just deep enough for a dowel, then drill a pilot for a screw, screw it tight and plug the hole, it should hold then.

You are forgiven---You have been digging and everyone knows that can affect the memory---the devil invented shovels to make life miserable.
Man, ain't that the truth.:)
