Hello, We just had a 3 ton Trane/American Standard Allegiance 13 with r22 installed for our second floor. We now need to replace the furnace/blower, coil and line set as per the AC guy as they are too small - there was a 1.5 ton unit previously..He quoted us 5K which I feel is steep. I found a furnace blower and coil on craigslist that is supposed to be new for $750..so how is this Ac fellow charging me 5K? Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks very much...

You need a new A/C guy.

Why was the size increased from 1.5 tons, to 3 tons.

Also, you are getting 13 SEER with that old coil.
And you probably won't get 13 SEER if you mismatch a coil to that condenser.

Doubtful your duct work is large enough for that 3 ton unit either.

Is the guy that installed it a contractor. Or a side jobber.
Either way, you have received a very poor job.

Get a real company in. to see what size you really need. And what can be salvaged.

we bought the house that way..it was undersized to begin with and the home inspector did not catch that..we had sears install at 2 ton at first..they undersized it as its the second floor with cathedral ceilings..we had 5 different contractors come in all said we need 3 tons..so we put the 3 ton in and its working but am concerned it will overheat etc..the space is about 1200 sq feet..the duct work may or may not work..i just dont want the central air unit to get damaged because the blower is undersized ...I hope I am making sense..We have had about 5 different contractors here..some said the same thing..most were looking to get our money..the recurring theme is coil, blower needs to be bigger..then maybe one day we will get the vents made bigger if that what it takes..

Look in the phone book for a company that is NCI(or other national certified) company. For air balancing.

They can check your ducts. And tell you what is need to do your system proper. Instead of you just throwing money into guess work.

Sounds like everyone you had out. Is guessing at size. By just using 400 sq ft to the ton.

What excatly is he wanting to do for 5k. If he is offering to replace all duck, work space is very confined(requires more man hours) You see where I am going. Were all the contractors around 5k? Just thinking, not sugesting the price is right.

Good luck, keep us informed.

$750.00

If you can't confirm that the unit is new or like new then you are buying a pig in a poke.

Just think a brand new in box installed is going to work, if not it gets replaced or fixed with full warranty.

Bought second hand after instal it does not work then what? Maybe a simple repair maybe not.

Just thinking!!
