Still looking but I can't find a store locally (Gainesville, GA) that sells 5/8" cement board in anything but a 40 sheet bundle that comes with a $600+ price tag. I only need 6 sheet of 3x5 to finish the shower.

Question is: Can I build out behind the backer board with drywall/wood/something relatively cheap in order to enable the use of a 1/2" cbu or so?

Appreciate the help!

Only done about 10 encloser and all where done with 1/2?
What are you matching up to that it needs to thicker?
If I had to build it out I'd just use wooden lattice.

Not much difference between an 1/8th of an inch. Once you put the mud on the tile, it will come out looking as if it is all the same height. It depends on what tile you are using. Can you post a link to the tile that you plan on using.

There is 5/8" between the outside of the studs and the inside of shower pan flange. I'm just a DIYer and new to tiling shower walls but my understanding is that the backer board needs to be flush with the top of the flange. My plan was to use a 6 mil plastic barrier behind the cement board and overlapping a peel and stick flashing at the bottom that would sit on top of the flange. CBU installed over that with waterproofing flush with the flange and on top of the flashing. The tile would then go over the flange and the bottom would caulked for a complete water tight seal.

Having trouble inserting a picture...
