Need advice -how to fix drainage issue in yard - it is badly eroded and tree root are exposed

Would French drain help?
Would outdoor sump pit help?
Would yard regrade help?
Should I have the tree cut down?
"Erosion" means the soil has washed somewhere, if so, where did it go and why can't the water drain there too? If you mean "settled," then start with finding where the low points on the outer reaches of your yard are that water can drain to, or as Neal asks, a nearby storm catch basin, culvert or ditch.

French drain: usually if there is somewhere downhill to discharge
Outdoor sump: maybe, but only if you don't have freezing and still need a place to discharge the collection
Regrade: always
Tree: some species the roots grow nearer the surface. Shouldn't be indicating settlement or affecting drainage though.

Measuring existing grade elevations is where to start to come up with a plan.

Easiest and cheapest is to dig a pit and install a "dry well". Home Depot sells the 40 gallon Flo-Well by NDS for $75 (plus the cost of fabric and gravel, etc.) that is designed for a DIY project.

Flo-well has a lot of information online including how to do the installation.

What you are doing is providing a place for the water to go that is below grade and then the water will gradually percolate into the ground.

If you can divert water away from the area, so much the better. If not then the dry well is the best approach and once it is in place you can forget about it.

Water flows downhill and can be pumped uphill. You have water, find out where to send it and make it flow there or pump it there. Or eliminate the cause of the water.

Ayuh,..... As Thomas said,.... Water, flows downhill,......

The sump pit would be my last choice, as it'll just fill up, 'n the wet spot is still there,.....

A french drain is Ok, if ya got somewhere to drain it to daylight,......

Regradin' the yard is My 1st choice, so long as there's somewhere lower to drain it too,......

The tree, is up to you,.... it doesn't appear to be the dam in the water's path,........
