I recently added a one story addition with a shed roof to a 2 story home. The roof ends at both corners of the house where the vertical vinyl runs up the corner. The contractor wrapped some kind of tape around it but it leaked. To fix the leak, he sealed the siding to the corner with clear caulk. This seems like a patch, how should it be done?

Its inproper flashing detail, with 30 years in building and construction trades I have become a troubleshooting expert. When tieing in to existing structure you need experience in the area of detail flashing and waterproofing. Ask a sheet metal flashing expert to look at the problem. . Have the flashing expert do the proper installation then have the flashing expert write a detailed explanation as to the problem then take it to your contractor for reinbursment of costs. There should be no doubt as to the liability of costs for the repairs. Have a great day!

Shingles? Metal? Might help if we knew what type of roofing. Step flashing with shingles and sidewall flashing with metal. Silicone and caulking is not the way to fix it. Get someone with some roofing know how to help you out.

How did you notice the leak? Is there damage inside as well?
When a new roof joins an old wall and it leaks, there is a lot of damage that could be hidden. Besides just fixing the flashing, I would do a little investigating to see how much moisture got into the wall, etc. The contractor should also be liable for this damage repair too.
Future mold issues are just one concern, and further into the future rotting may occur. Something to watch out for!
