My cooling stopped working from early morning today. Right now I am sitting in Phoenix without cooling.

There was stormy weather yesterday all night (it was high wind and lightning). sometime in midnight cooling stopped working.

I checked just before posting and heating part is working so air handler is fine it seems.

Also when we tried to start in evening, the unit outside (heat exchanger) started, and made sputtering sound few times and stopped in 5-10 seconds. The electrical power did not trip.

What might be happening here? Is it a possible DIY project ?

I also need to tell that i have analogue (mercury based) thermostat controller. I had opened it 2 days before to see back wires connection. But it worked after that for full one day. Can that be contributing factor. can it be possibly fixed by just changing thermostat?

Also I forgot to add is that I am on very tight budget, and want to not overspend, and do the job in minimum possible.

As I am no HVAC man, I will have to search for the fuses and look for disconnect there and blown fuse , and bad capacitor etc.

To begin with I will exclude fan and compressor part and concentrate on fuse and capacitors.

Can you tell me where to find them?

2 story home , air handler in attic and single 5 tonne Goodman exchange unit outside the home .
