My 18 y/o Trane unit that cools the 2nd floor died so I need to replace. Since the furnace in the attic is the same age, im replacing them both for a new matched system (AC and Furnace). The question is do I go for a 14 seer or a 17 seer system. The 17 seer costs $750 more. So will I save enough over the next 10 years for the more efficient model to pay for itself?

I know there are 100 different factors that would influence this, but anyone have any ideas? I live in GA where it gets hot and I like to keep the house around 74. Only dogs home during the day though, so we let it up to 78 during those times.

Thoughts?
