i put the first mud/tape on my new light weight drywall. paper tape and sheetrock 90.

it looks like it filled in pretty good. should i add another layer of 90. or can i start the finish layer with the premix stuff with the puck green lid (iirc, this is the correct stuff)

I would suggest scrap off any high ridges then add a coat of all purpose(bright green lid) with a wider knife than the first coat. Then your fial coat with the puke green lid.

i am going to sand what is one there now, the setting compound. there won't be much sanding to do. i was really carefull on leaving high spots. i will then wipe it down.

i will get a bucket of each green.

well. they didn't have the bright green lid stuff. so i got the green lid. it seems to be working out ok. but my skills need developing.

btw. how long does this stuff last once opened ?

Should be skooping it out into to a mud pan or hawk, not working out of the bucket. Keep the cover on when not refilling.
When done for the day use your knife to smooth out the top layer in the bucket. The less surface area exposed to air the longer it last.
Do not wipe your knife off on the top edge of the bucket, the dryed out chips will fall into the mud.

Also when done for the day and after you have smoothed the top add enough water to cover the top of the mud. This will keep it from getting a crust, just remember to pour the water off before you use it. And if it is going to be a long storage add a cap full of bleach to the water. Again remember to pour off before you use.

Never heard of the bleach for long storage, why is that? and how long is long?

The reason is when mud goes sour it it the bacteria that causes it and the bleach kills the bacteria. I have had buckets that have been open, then resealed this way, for months, and when you open them and pour off the water and mix you can't tell it from mud opened yesterday.
