Hello fellow DIY'ers. Here's my situation. On the side of my house I leave my three trash bins. Under the bins it gets all muddy when it rains. Therefore when we throw the garbage out each time we track mud into the house. So I Dug a trench for a drain pipe as seen in photos below. Also trenched out a space to cut the fence by 1-2". Now I'm taking suggestions and recommendations as to the next step.... I would like to put down brick or stone or something so that the bins can sit on it during the week as well as slope it to the middle a bit so that when it does rain it collects in the drain I put in and runs off in the bushes. Ultimate goal is to fix the fence and prevent rot and more importantly, create a dry/ mud free area for the trash bins.

Please me know your thoughts and how you would proceed.

Then you didn't cut the boards off. Then you dug up a lot of dirt and installed a drain (which no one recommended).

I did cut the fence. Thy part is done. What I am ask for recommendations for is how and what to put down as far as stone and what to put under it and in between the stones so its level and slopes to the drain. The fence issue was only a secondary issue that came up when Someone notice it was not installed correctly. My reason for initially posting was to come up with a solution for the mud issue.

I'd just put down some gravel and call it a day.

Well, your images show the boards still touching the ground, so how are we supposed to know you cut them?

The concept behind cutting the boards was not only to hopefully prevent your fence from rotting out, but to eliminate the closure between the ground the the vertical surface, hopefully allowing the water the drain rather than stagnate and cause mud. Perhaps you've had a chance to see if this has been effective so far.

Now that you have a drain, making it effective means putting it at the low point of this area. So build up the terrain farthest from the drain and make it slope slightly towards the drain. You need to do this grading with dirt, not gravel. Then you can put gravel on top if you want, which will hopefully avoid you having to actually walk on the dirt/mud.

Got it.. So I have done all the sloping and covering it with Dirt. then would you put a layer of gravel down and then pavers on top of that? and ultimately slope the pavers towards the center where the drain grate is? Also I have never laid brick or stones or anything before so in doing so what would you put in between each paver? to keep them in place so that when I wheel the trash bins on and off them twice a week they stay and dont move around.

Not sure I’m on board with your slope to the middle idea. I saw your other thread but I think more info is needed.

What is the lay of the land? Is the neighbors lot higher than yours, lower than or what.

Pictures showing the entire area (beyond the fence) would help.

This specific small area is on the other side of the fence that divides my lot and my neighbors. On the other side of the fence is dirt with hedges planted in it and then their driveway of concrete.

On my side as you can see is this dirt area in which currently becomes muddy when it rains hence why I want to throw something on top of the dirt so that I can just wheel the trash bins on and off it and when it rains have the water run off into a drain that slopes away from the new pavers or whatever I end up putting down.

Does that help more to paint a picture?
