Hello all,

I need to move a ceiling light about 3 inches to the left or 3 joists over from the current position. See photo.

House is fully finished so I need to understand what I am dealing with.

Can someone tell me what can be done with some options and roughly what I can expect to pay?

Thanks everyone

Is the photo from before the house was finished?

Depends how involved you want to get. Moving the light 3" over is very little. Why would you want to move it only 3"?
Huesmann,

Thanks for the response.

This is a picture before the house was finished so that you get perspective on where the light is currently located and where the new location would be.

As for the new location, that should have read 3 feet, not inches. My apologies.

Regards

You should be able to find an electrician that can do that but some references would be nice. If done properly, it won't botch up the ceiling but will require you to tolerate a blank plate at the old location. You could paint it.

The trick is to use a 1/2 or 3/4 flex bit to drill through the joist panels and fish new nm cable over and mount a new box. Probably cost you 2~3 hundred bucks for a competent professional.. maybe 150 for a handiman but riskier.

Thanks surferdude2,

Can I assume that if I didn't want a plate, the only solution would be to find someone competent who could rerun/route wire to my electrical panel?

Basically yes...as your Jbox has to be accesable.....but maybe your 3 FEET is closer to your circuit, in which case you could just abondone your old light and patch.

(I'm a lttle/very uncertain about this, and never used this...but I think they have come out with a rated behind the wall elctrical splice, wherby you could splice and patch your old light.

Maybe someone would clarrify the splice unit I'm refering to and its code rateing. I can;t remember its name, but is at HD.)

PS...Good to know you meant 3 Feet...I was haveing trouble knowing how 3" involved 3 joist bays...:wink2:

I doubt you'll be able to find anybody that would want to attempt that but I would have to have more details to see if it would even be possible.

The blank plate could be a typical single gang plastic wall plate blank that could be painted to match the ceiling color. 2 gang ones are also available if need be.

new wire would have to be run from the light switch on the wall most likely,

which would require cutting a few holes in the ceiling and wall
Well I am not an electrician but my logic would tell me if run the wire to the basement from the light switch and up the wall in between the studs I could cut down on the number of holes.
