I have a box attached to the side of a joist in the normal fashion, a ceramic light fixture on it, and a small LED light screwed in.

I would like to remount the electrical box with screws through the bottom of the box so that it is 90* normal. That would effectively raise the level of the light 6" so that people don't have to look at the bulb.

Any code issues with this?

There's no reason it can not be turned 90 deg. but you can not add screws inside the box.
Going to have to open up the wall and add a horizontal 2 X 4 to attach it to.

Are you talking about a box mounted on the joist with an unfinished ceiling (like a basement?

Screws through the back of a 1900 box is a common practice.

To OP, what type of box are you planning on using?

I think he's saying rotate the entire box, fixture, and bulb up into the bay between the joists. In other words, the bulb horizontal above the bottom of the joist rather than the fixture/bulb below the joist with the bulb hanging down.

I don't think you are allowed to drill/screw your own mounting holes in plastic boxes unless they are at points designated/allowed by the mfg.
Anyone know for sure? If necessary I can mount the box to a piece of wood and attach the wood to the joist, but it would be so much easier to just screw through the bottom of the box.
