If I get in before the rock guy gets in, I use french cleats to mount mantels. I use a 2x6 ripped at a 45 degree angle and mount half on the mantel from behind and the other half on the wall. Once the two are mated, I run 3" screws vertically through the 2x6 to firm it up. Now the mantel is sticking out 1 1/2" from the wall.

The benefit of this is you aren't hiding 2" of your mantel once the rock goes on, and the rock will hide the 2x6.

Even that split log hung well using cleats. It was a bear to lift

I use French cleats to mount a lot of things. I mounted both of these mantles I made recently. Cleats were roughly 1 1/4" each, heightwise. I normally use a hardwood when making them.
