I have 500 sq ft of mexican satillo tile i want to set on a concrete floor (covered patio). I would like to know if i can use a mortar mix rather than a thinset and if so do i add anything to the mortar. I have experimented and found that the tile absorbs the moisture so quickly you don't have time to set the correct spacing. I would appreciate any advice.

I gotta admit I'm not a saltillo expert, but my understanding is that when installing saltillo, one dips each tile in a bucket of water prior to setting it so it won't suck the water out of the mortar.

I don't know about the mortar mix... I think thinset and a trowel with fat notches, like 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2 would be the way to go.

Maybe someone else here has more information.... Jazman? You out there?

Did you ever try the mortar mix? Did the tile stick?
I'm going to try it in the bathroom with 4 tiles. I did some repairs and the floor not high enough. Going to level with mortar and place tile in mortar. Hope it sticks.
