Help! The wood molding that goes between the vinyl siding and brick on my house is rotting and I need to replace it. I thought it was just some type of molding that could just be taken off and a new one nailed back on, but someone told me that it goes up underneath the siding and that the siding has to be lifted up and replace the wood, then put the siding back in place. I was hoping that my 14 year old son and I could do this project. I can't afford to hire someone and it might take a while to get it finished. Is there an easy way that someone could tell me how to fix this?

Ron is right in this case, a picture is necessary. Off hand I can't think of any molding that would go under the siding and be exposed at the same time. I'm picturing the vinyl siding being in J-channel, as it should be, and maybe the J-channel being up against the brick or wood molding. If you can't post a picture maybe you are a better artist than I am and could provide us with a good drawing of this. Let's work together and see if we can help you. David

It sounds like a brick freeze at the junction. Yes the siding will have to come off, but you should only have to remove the bottom piece. The siding snaps together and you will have to unsnap the first and second row. Lift the second row out of the way to remove the nails in the first row. Remove the first row of siding and j channel. Then replace the brick freeze.
