We have a cabin by stream in the mountains. The ceiling of the porch is untreated wood that has come to be covered with black mold. I plan to have this treated and then covered with a product to keep the moisture from making this a prime area for mold to grow. Since it gets no sunlight, I was considering polyurethane or spar varnish. I'm looking for very low maintanance. Andy suggestions?

I absolutely agree with you. I recommend spar urethane to all of my customers when they ask about staining and sealing exterior doors. You have the right idea. I would advise replacing the moldy wood. You said that you were treating it, but when you get some sort of black mold on anything, the best way to rid yourself of it's effects is to eraticate it.
