mini split BTU question...

132 sq ft? Any chance you can put in a regular wall unit? It would be way way WAY cheaper, and do the job just as well. A through the wall unit is basically a window air conditioner with some slight modifications. A room that small just doesn't need a split system.

I have considered shoving a wall unit in there. The wife on the other hand doesn't like "holes" put in her walls.:icon_rolleyes:
It is used as an office where she makes tons on phone calls and wants a quiet system in there.

Crap I for got to add this room has cathedral ceilings and the washer/dryer is in there which makes more noise than she likes and doesn't want to add more.

I understand the reasons as you stated them. The split systems are very quiet. They do require 240V and a seperate disconnect outside. I personally would live with the noise, but keeping her happy may be well worth the added costs with the split system. Does that room require heat as well? Some of those systems have heating capability as well. Good luck with the project.

the room has sufficient heating from baseboard running almost the entire length of the walls (overkill IMO). its not only the quiet she wants. It also the ugly look of a window from the outside.

So how's about that LG unit I linked? Yeah it should be a big learning curve DIY. But I am lucky enough to live across the street from a HVAC contractor and a licensed electrician. Both who will help for the cost of beer.

The LG is a good unit. You may want to check out Mitsubishi, but I doubt those are that cheap. Does your HVAC neighbor have a reccomendation?

He uses Mitsubishi and Fugitsu only. Too much $$$ imho

I have a GE PTAC in my converted garage / hobby room. Works great, but is a bit noisy for a quite area or bedroom. Similar to the systems common in hotel rooms. I travel quite a bit for my work and find many of them noisy.

I plan to put a mini-split in a master bedroom addition this summer. The LG units seem to be of good quality and price. Agree, the biggie is the noise factor - for many units specs list the air handler noise level and some have an extra quiet setting. Many of the higher SEER units will now run on 120VAC rather than 240VAC.

Read through the installation instructions - all are pretty simple to physically install. And you have the ready availability of a HVAC tech to do the final bring up of the unit so you are home free.

LGs are good. Try order a full blown troubleshooting and service and parts manual ASAP. Hard to get them a few years down the road and the models change frequently. The owners manual does not have the in depth service info a tech needs.

Sounds like a reasonable price , go for it.

Not at all. I was looking for furnaces that I could purchase w/o an HVAC company and found them that way. I can't give any positive or negative feedback, but the pricing looks good on most things.
