I recently repaired my GE space saver OTR microwave and in the process, I was cautioned to check for leaks when I was done. I did the cellphone test and the phone maintained a signal and could receive calls. So, that would suggest that there is a leak, or does it?

While my old microwave was down, I bought a brand new GE countertop model to use and keep as a backup. I tried the same cellphone test on this brand new unit and got the same result. The phone seemed unaffected by being inside with the door closed.

How definitive is the cellphone test? Is it possible that with today's wireless network technology that this method no longer works?

They operate on different frequencies, they are designed to stop their own wave length and by chance some microwaves may block them. I would not believe failing the test means anything. You used to be able to buy a tester, the one i bought had a light and a buzzer, neither went off when we put it in the microwave and started it.

I have (or used to have; not sure now) an old Radio Shack Microwave Leakage tester. It was a simple field strength meter tuned to the specific wavelength used by the MW. I never got much of a reading when I ran it around the seals or at the window, but the needle would budge just enough to let me know the device was working.

Get a small old fashioned fluorescent tube and run it around the door and window with the appliance running. If it is leaking the bulb will light. No kidding, it works.

Thanks for your replies!

So, I have a cheapo leak detector on the way. Got decent reviews so hopefully it was worth it.

I did try the fluorescent tube test with a 12" lamp right after the repair. Yes, it was a traditional tube and not a CFL. I held it up to every part of the MW that I could reach and not even a flicker.

The detector should be here Saturday so I'll report back when I have results.
