From what I read/researched exposed nm cable should be in some sort of sleeve. Metal conduit would meet the requirement. Existing 12 gauge wire comes down from ceiling into outlet. Length is roughly 3feet from ceiling to outlet. Plan to use 3/4" conduit with bushing at top where wire enters conduit. There are no heat buildup issues with a run this small? What is the reason nm cable is usually not run in conduit heat or difficulty to pull wire? Assuming the 3/4" metal conduit is fine to use for this short run? Thanks for your help.

NM only needs to be in Conduit, if it comes down a wall and could be easily damaged. Otherwise when it runs up in the joist bays, or attached to 1x4's to keep people from hanging stuff on the Romex, there is nothing wrong with it being exposed in Basements, Crawlspaces, garages, attics, sheds.
