Lately my dishwasher is not properly cleaning the dishes, silverware, etc. Frequently there is food residue on several of the dishes and silverware. The soap dispenser opens ok but there is frequently a small amount of soap stuck inside that has not washed out.

I did clean the filter on the bottom and all the inside parts look normal and turn ok. It is 13 years old. What is the average life of a dishwasher? Perhaps it is just tired or wearing out. I am wondering whether to call a repairman or just buy a new one.

You might try a simple fix first. Something like a dishwasher cleaner for mineral buildup. I.e. http://www.bosch-home.com/us/store/product/DishwasherCleaner/00575402

13 years is nothing unless it's in a restaurant.
