Good Afternoon,
I've spent a couple of days at my daughters trying to lower her elec. bill. Sealing attic ductwork, more insulation etc. I caught the outdoor temp. @ 47 this morning so I checked the temp rise at the air handler and 18 degree is all it would do.
She has a 2 ton 10 seer unit. I phoned the only HVAC guy I know and he seemed to think its performing as it should. I've done some online research and the output should be 22k btu @ 47 degrees, which on paper is a 24 degree temp rise.
I'm sure there's variables, but based on this would you work on it or wait till warmer temps to really fix it. Any response welcomed, and thanks.

Call someone else willing to come out and do there job.
Must be a really small place and that unit also must be really old just judging by the 10 seer.
Old leaking windows, sure there's enough insulation?

Joe, Thanks for your reply. 1200 sq. ft. 2004 model unit, vinyl insulated glass windows, not enough insulation they're coming tomorrow.
Been, Thanks also. 2 ton 10 & 13 seer have the same btu output @ 47 degrees. I just didn't know if the temp rise should be the same.
On a side note I was really surprised how hot the suction line was.

I'll assume this is a heat pump? Temperature rise at the air handler? What does this mean. I must be missing something. If you measure the air coming into the heat pump, return air duct, and the temperature at the register, what is the differential? How did it cool this last summer?:wink:

Update

Good evening, Took everyones advise & had a tech out yesterday. Not the best of days for service ( around 35 degrees ambient ). By the gauges the unit wasn't low, he said if anything it had to much charge. His advice was to wait till warmer weather since it wasn't completely broken.
So today I decided to compare it to my properly operating 13 seer HP. Believe it or not the suction line temps on each unit were basicly the same 125 to 130 @ 40 ambient, but she has a 14 degree TR while I enjoy a 22 degree TR.
She burns scented candles, so much so the filter looks like its been painted with flat black paint. Could the oils from the candles adhere to the Acoil to make it not pick up all the heat thats there? I know I'm thinkin out of the box.

Could coat the coil and prevent some of the heat from transferring to the air.

Thank You, Thank You, Been Sir, Today while I was there I turned the heat off, the AH fan on, a therm in the supply read exactly the same as return air at grille. So the return isn't sucking cold attic air. By my math its running 70% efficient.
I know I'll never get to 100%, 85 to 90 would tickle me pink. As far as cleaning, hot soapy water with a sprayer or do they make better solutions? And thanks again
