I bought a 1909 house in central texas with a sandstone veneer . i have read I should use a soft mortar (lime and sand only ?) what would be the proper proportion for the mix?

In 1909 in Central Texas, the chances are good that it is a portland mortar, although still soft. You should determine that first.

Alamo Cement was founded in 1880. There are 5 cement plants and 2 lime plants within a 100 mile radius of Austin.

I wonder if the masons in 1909 worked if it was 100 degerees outside?? any of you around in 1909?

I would bet money they did...without air conditioning your blood thins to accomodate the heat...Not saying they weren't sweating, but they were working.
