I have demoed the old stone fireplace and now what want to change it to marble tile like the attached picture.

Should I frame out around the firebox opening with 2x4 and then backerboard and tile. Or should I hang backerboard directly to the brick.

If I frame out with studs, do I wrap my tile around to the inside covering the edge of the 2 x 4. Or is there some other correct fire proofing method.

Yes but can the backerboard be hung on the brick or should it be on studs?

If it is on 2 x 4 studs, how do I cover the inside of the 2x4? Should i wrap my backboard and tile around? See image.

This is a traditional wood burning fireplace with gas starter. This fireplace will be used.
