I have a
Malibu 8100-9045-01 45 watt 12VAC outdoor transformer

The transformer works except for the photo cell. The transformer has a photo cell test function and it shows bad.The cell is on a 2 wire cord that plugs into the bottom of the transformer. Since it is plug in I assume (maybe in error) that it is replaceable. Have done numerous google searches and am unable to find a replacement.

Any one have any ideas?

You should call Malibu. Their customer service/parts number is 1-888-295-7348.
8:30am to 5:00 pm CST, Mon-Fri.
The device to which you refer is almost certainly a Light Dependent Resister (LDR). However, there is also the plug connection and mounting involved.

You should, in the first instance, contact the manufacturer concerning a spare part. Since the entire device is available for about $50, the spare part should not cost TOO much - but that is not always the case!

While LDRs can be obtained for a few cents each, there are various types - with different Light/Dark resistance ranges and you will need to obtain an appropriate type to suite the electronics in the "box", should you choose to do a DIY repair.

Also, are you sure that the LDR has "failed". (This would be quite unusual, since such components are not normally "stressed" when in operation).
Is there, perhaps, some problem (open circuit) with the connection to the device or to its plug connection?

Because it is a photocell that turns the unit with multiple Off settings. There even make one that will set an actual OFF time. So on at dusk, off at 1am.

It would not technically replace the LDR, but would replace its functionality.

Sorry that I give you wrong eBay item number. The correct eBay number is 371829265599. But this item number could be change after item Buy It Now have ended. If you search on eBay "Malibu Transformer Photo Cell Sensor", you will find it. Hope this will help you.
