My friend bought an older home (built post WW-II) last year. During its lifespan, a back utility room has been
Added to the back side of the single story home. Just his past week.... What sounds like a "low battery alarm" of a smoke/CO2 detector is emanating from the room...., however it seems to come from different places behind the drywall. So far, we have x2. 12" squares cut in ceiling (no insulation so far) and nothing found.

Any ideas on isolating, finding this beeping with the least amount of damage to walls and wallet?

Most likly someone rocked over a smoke detector.
A glass help up againt the ceiling and your ear may work to get you closer.

You can also buy one of these to help isolate and track down the sound.

We use these to listen to gear boxes, bearings, motors etc. Works very well.

Yep, those are awesome for so many sounds, motor bearings and engine pulleys, too....

I am aware of a pissed off drywaller (at the general) who placed a battery powered alarm clock into a condo we were building with the alarm set for 1:00 or 2:00am behind the drywall in the master bed wall. Nobody around to hear it til somebody buys it an sleeps there....white noise...

Eventually that battery will die completely and it will stop.

By then you might be spending the night at the MHU inpatient ward since you've gone insane. But eventually, it will stop.

You know, this seems like it would be a very evil prank when building a house or redoing a basement. Put a 10 year guarantee smoke detector between every stud.

Hey!

Ding Dong... The beep is dead....

The wicked beep is dead!

With a $4 auto stethoscope from Harbor Freight.... (Helped minimize a butt loaded
of drill holes); A 1/2" drill bill on a cordless drill; a borrowed Snap-on digital image bore scope....
Found... Ripped out and trashed. It was a carbon monoxide alarm vice smoke.

Ok... Now have to plug and patch up the hole! Thanks much for all the
Great suggestions. Very much appreciated. (Salute)
