I'm currently working on a remodeling project. I removed the trim from the "half wall" divider (not sure what to call that wall). As expected, the drywall underneath the trim wasn't completed, so theres a bit of unevenness to the wall right now. Also, the top wasn't finished. Since I'm looking to put a decorative wood piece on top, I only need the corners finished. The only other thing is that it is also unfinished at the bottom.

Here are the pictures. The pic 1 is the goal in mind. I hope I've been descriptive enough. If not, let me know.

re-nail the bead and run mesh tape up and over the length of the cracks. Pull with a setting type mud....take your drywall knife and cut off all the loose paper. fixing the area is really pretty simple, just dont over do it with the mud. put it on and pull it off kinda thing.....on the top, the bead on the far end, is most likely cracked as well. When you run your mud on that end turn the corner with your mud.

I have to put a bead on those 2 corners where the drywall was cut also right?

I dont see why you would need to if you arre putting a wooded cap over the top.

Are you just putting a wood cap or cap and than trim underneath that.If you are not putting trim under the cap i would put corner bead or other drywall trim that way you will get a straight smooth edge under the wood cap.

I'm not going to put trim underneath the cap. The cap is going to be a bit smaller dimension than the dimension of the top, so I want to make sure the corner/top is smooth.

Will putting a corner bead give me the best results for this?

Im no pro but id do corner bead on the top also. You would get such a crisp perfect corner with it. I'm sure if you do drywall all day everyday you could accomplish the same thing without but for a DIY'r corner bead is the way to go.

j-channel would give you the finished edge and you could drop your wood into it. The only thing is is that your drywall is flush with the top. I'd just cap it with wood and run a trim piece under it. It's simple and can be done in minutes.

What's the purpose of running meshtape over the uneven portion where the trim used to be?

I vote against the corner bead and here is why if I can explain it right. Look at a piece of corner bead you have the 2 sides with the holes in them called legs. Then you have the rounded part some call the bowl. When you put the bead up the bowl sits very proud of the legs. This is so you have room for the mud. Now if you put bead on this you are going to have to fill this area with mud or you re going to have this ugly ball sticking up. If this doesn't make sense tell me and I'll try again. My vote would be make your wood piece a little wider than the top and put a piece of small quarter round or cove mould under it.

I may be overthinking it but every reason you just gave not to do it is every reason I was thinking I would do it.

It would leave a nice flat top surface with perfectly square corners. Much like in the first picture of what the OP wants it to look like.

That top 2x4 doesn't look to be perfectly flat anyway.

You dont have to use corner bead.The plastic tear away trim only sits on the drywall and not on the stud so that would be better i think.You could just chaulk under the cap but some type of drywall trim will make it look better.

The bead thats allready there i would peel all the loose paper and compound off and retape it all.
