I wanted to clean out the threads on this tee, there is some slight corrosion and crud.

it's a 1/2" fitting, Is it a 1/2" NPT thread?



On the other hand seems like a $20 tap may be over kill, is there a way to clean up the threads well, e.g. using another male fitting with slots cut into it. A PVC fitting is going to the bottom and currently from the plug I installed I know it is not leaking, maybe cutting the threads will make it worse?

A pipe thread will fix it but why fix it.
Those old steel fitting will always leak and start to close up on the insides.
Should have been replaced with new lines.

Taps are kind of spendy for one job. Try a brass nipple or steel nipple- run it in then remove it and check the threads. Also, a small copper fitting bush chucked into a drill works.

Thats a $2.00 part, why in the world would you waste that much time and risk a leak for $2.00 ?
