My wife and I have recently purchased a Craftsman bungalow, originally built in 1922. The exterior is painted stucco. The stucco is patterned and unusual. We are wanting to add on a couple of very small additions to the house and want it to look period. However, local guys advise us they cannot mimic the stucco so that it would not look like an addition.

Does anyone have any ideas? One of the bidding contractors suggested we use beadboard exterior and paint it the color of the stucco. The rationale is that beadboard was used with craftsman stucco homes in the 20's. But, I have never see this done and can't picture it.

Looking for ideas or opinions.

Do you have a picture of the exterior? Most craftsman homes were built between 1910-1925. The exterior finishes that I have studied and noted are stucco, wood siding and wood shingles and some brick work along the facade/front of home around covered porches. I would recommend looking at William Morris and mission eras for inspiration as well as other craftsman homes online galleries and see what you are liking.

I have worked on and designed for a number of California Bungalow homes that have had a vertical bead board around the skirt but not as one of the main field components.
they are here in So. Cal in the Old Town Historic District in the city of Orange.
I can't remember any Craftsman homes with the same though.

consider using the vinyl cpvc T&G bead board. you can get the beaded look or the v groove look,3" sizes or 5 1/4" sizes. Horizontal skirt board along the bottom of the wall with a drip cap and then t&g down to the drip cap...
the addition will need periodically spaced horizontal in wall blocking to accommodate the t&g siding

You can buy it like this that's about .050 thick or even solid. Not cheap but no maintance.

I would steer clear of vinyl. There are already too many craftsman homes that have been spoiled by vinyl and aluminum. THe actual style of the siding should be secondary to the Arts and Crafts ethos of simple design; hand crafted; natural material -- if you follow these directives, it will look good. You need some stucco guys who actually know what they are doing.

Not trying to a smart-a**, but thats a simple "pull" pattern, with a light knockdown.

Very easy to match.

Usually pulled with a flat square sponge, let it set for awhile, then lightly knocked down with a SS trowel.

Agreed they just don't want to do it. It can be done with stucco. At worst they have textured cement board
