We recently moved into a house in NorCal with a big, dead yard. We're planning to have a house warming party in a week or so and want to put something down to protect folks from the burr clover and thorny weeds and are wondering about the best approach.

We're thinking of seriously temporary solutions here (i.e., tarps, perhaps wood chips). We want nothing more than to keep folks from getting pricked by thorns at this point. The bar is very low. Any ideas?

Annual rye or oats could germinate by then.

You aren't going to get anything to grow and provide reasonable cover that fast. If you can find somebody who has well decomposed mulch it would be the ideal solution. You can spread it now to provide a good surface for your party and then till into the soil as a soil supplement prior to planting a new lawn.

Another option could be to spread straw in the area you want to use. It also will decompose very rapidly.

Find an old carpet, from a carpet store that has piled tear outs up to be sent to a landfill.

You say temporary, and this qualifies.
