Hello,
My 2nd post here. I am looking to replace 2x4 railings and want to do pocket holes from them to 4x4 posts. I have 2” deck screws that I intend to use. I have seen many options out there but will want a cheap one as this may be the onLy time I use it. I have seen some as Less as $50 which is my top for this but wasn’t sure if they the hole would be spaced apart enough for 2x4’s. Thanks

You really don't need a jig but you do need longer construction grade screws.

Carefully start the bit straight in to a depth of about 3/16- 1/4 " then turn your drill at approx 45 degree angle to the top rail and drill a 1/8" hole to the post. Then simply run your screw in. You will figure out how deep the straight hole needs to be to allow the screw head to fully seat and be filled with putty.

If I want countersunk screws at angle I start with about half larger drill bit and drill a hole. Then make the countersink by starting plumb to the hole then angling a bit so enough wood is dug out to countersink the screw head. You want enough of the screw to be in the rail so when I do this I start as much as 1.25" away from the edge then use 3" screw so at least another 1.25" is in the post.

From now on, though, I plan to use concealed flange joist hangers. They don't look that bad where it shows and I can either prime it for stain or paint it and let it show.

For a really neat termination, I found these on a bargain bin at HD years ago and bought all they had for $1 each. Screw it in to the end of your 2x4 rail, then position it and screw the plate into the 4x4 or 6x6. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Precision-Black-Plastic-Railing-Connectors-2-Pack-RAILCON-B/206530657
That's a good find.
I like those a lot better then the metal ones.
They are much better looking and seem easier to install

Not only would they hold better then pocket screws but would be easy to replace a piece if needed.

I will definitely keep those in mind.
