Needing to replace the siding on my summer cabin this year. Vinyl would be the cheapest, but also considering log siding, to give it a rustic look. Don't know much about it though. I live in the middle of Nebraska, and only place I can get locally is Menards - cedar, spruce, or pine.

it looks like the pieces overlap each other, and no sort of tongue and groove set up, what is the likely hook of separating?

How much maintenance does it take per year?

Anyone have experience with this?

Any real wood product requires maintenance. Cedar is less susceptible to rot and insects, so safer.

My wife and I have a log home (built it by ourselves). It's real logs, but the gable ends are matching log siding that's only 1-1/2 inches thick. It's been up just over three years, and there's no evidence of shrinking or separation. But ours came with the house kit and was kiln dried.

The only maintenance required is to restain every 5 years or so. We used Sikkens brand (quite expensive) but there are others. There are also additives you can get that will repel insects.

The last place you want to buy log siding is a big box store like Menards, unless you're filthy rich. There are literally dozens of log home companies in the U.S., many of which will sell you just the siding you need and deliver it. Our kit came from Daniel Boone Log Homes. They are headquartered in Nashville, TN. I'm sure there are others closer to you.

I used to work at Homestead log homes in between Payette and Wieser Idaho. While I was there we came up with the idea of using the cut off log faces for siding and I walled an entire wall of the shop with it as a demo.

We ship lapped the edges of ours, it has been many years since I worked there but they may still be selling that. It was quite easy to install, not terribly expensive and with the shiplap edges went together quite nicely.

As for care, you will have to seal it and work on it every few years, that is just the nature natural wood.
