Hi everyone,

I've sort of been left high and dry with my heating system.

I built a new house 1 1/2 years ago and I installed a Luxaire heat pump. The guy's that I purchased the system from has split up and no one is taking responsibility for the system.

The problem is my aux. heat is coming on too often at warm temperatures. I done some research and found out that I can lock out my aux heat if I install an outside temperature sensor to a certain degree. My system is set up for two zones and I have two Honeywell Visionpro 8000's thermostats, model's T8320U. I have one outside sensor in which I hooked it to my main floor t-stat. The problem is that in going through the menu to option 340, option 2 isn't available. Only option 1, which is only an outside temp display.

Does anyone know what I have to do to enable option 2 so I can lock out my aux heat?

Thanks,
Tankmister

Is your aux heat controlled by the thermostat, or is the zone panel wired up to control it? With luxaire depending on which model you have, the outside unit may be controlling it. Post full model number of outdoor unit, along with brand and model number of zone panel.

Good Morning!

Thanks for the replies guys.

My outdoor unit is Luxaire HL8B048F1C and my zone controller is a Robertshaw 2701-006.

I just read the manual that came with the zone controller and there are a couple of things that stand out to me.

First, in the introduction it says "Slimzone is compatible with both single stage heating and cooling units and single compressor heat pumps with auxiliary heat" I know my heat pump is a two stage heat pump so is this zone controller not turning on the second stage?

Second, "This system requires standard electromechanical or electronic heat/cool thermostats. Do not use heat pump thermostats because a call for compressor from the thermostats will be recognized by the panel as a cool call only. The control algorithm in this panel is configured such that heat pump thermostats are not required." Both of my Visionpro 8000's, under system type (170) are set to number 8, 2 heat/2 cool multistage conventional. To me this seems to be incorrect for this zone controller.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Tankmister

Right settings. Wrong zone panel for that heat pump.

The ondemand defrost board can lock out the aux heat until X outdoor temp, it has its own outdoor thermostat.

Good chance your installer wired it that the panel is controlling aux heat.

You have a high end heat pump and a ow end zone panel.

My Installer says that the outside panel is controlling the aux heat. He says Y2 from the tstat goes to the outside unit.

I'm really frustated with this whole situtation. After spending alot of money on a heating system that isn't preforming like I think it should.

Please tell me if this seems right to you? This morning when I got up the temp in the house was 1 degree below the set point so 5kw of heat came on. After a few minutes all 15kw comes on to bring the heat to the set point. This part makes sense to me. What doesn't make sense to me is that it was only -1.5 deg C outside.

I'm heating about 4600sq ft with a 4 ton unit.

Am I expecting too much from this system or is there something wrong?

Thanks,
Tankmister

What temp is the balance point set to? The defrost board has a balance point setting, and a compressor lock out setting. The balance point setting determines at what outdoor temp the aux heat can and can't come on at, it can be set to 10°F(-12°C).

It sounds like your stat is controlling the aux heat. Might want to check to see what the above settings I talked about are at.

Sorry for taking a few days to get back!

I'm attaching a pic of the setup before I made some changes. The hot heat pump was off, I turned it on but now I've turned it back off again. I found the air handler woundn't speed up. I've changed the defrost curve to 2 because according to the manual that I downloaded it should be on 2 for a 4-5 ton heat pump.

Is the LTCO in the right place because my aux heat was on again this morning at 1 deg C?

Does everything else look ok on my setup?

Thanks,
Tankmister

You have the balance point set to either 0 or 10, and Compressor lock out at -10. So the aux shouldn't be coming on. Probably not wired up right. The thermostat's W terminal should wire to the W1 and W2 of the defrost board, and the defrost board's W1 out and W2 out wire to the air handler. The thermostat shouldn't have any wire from its W terminals to the air handler.
