During our remodel process I am finding cold spots and air leaks and am sealing everything up I can identify. I still have drafts in some spots I am working on pinning down.

I am wondering if any of these $100 or so infrared thermometers are useful in pin pointing areas where cold air is coming in? I've see a video of a home inspector use one, but it was like a $3000 model.

Would one of the inexpensive ones be useful at all?

If the temperature divisions and accuracy of the pyrometer are small enough it would help locate cold spots/ sources. It won't be as accurate as a thermal image, but it will get you close.

Mine's by Raytheon and has a laser sight.

Jamie, I've borrowed one of these and it's a great help. Very good at zoning in on a wall, top to bottom. In some stud spaces mine shows a huge difference. Also good for pinpointing leaks along baseboards, at inside corners of dividing walls etc.
The one that really surprised me was headers over exterior doors.
