Want to replace an old round, drop in bathroom sink with a new one. The old sink is about 18 inches. The new one I want is 19". The extra inch, I assume, will overhang and "self rim" to the bathroom countertop.

Question: What should I do if the new sink drain doesn't exactly line up with the existing trap (metal)? Would I have to re-work it from the wall? If so I assume I might have to torch some of the fittings to release the solder? See attached photos.

Thank you for your time!

I would cut the copper back to a stub out of the wall and solder on a copper trap adapter. Replace the trap with PVC tubular.

If your soldering skills are not good, use a Fernco coupling between the copper stub and the PVC.

That accordion tail piece is a clog waiting to happen. Don't use it.
Great thank you for all this info!

If you don't mind, could you tell me what you think of the sink I'd like to install?

In the photo above the diameter of the sink from the metal ring to metal ring (outside measurements) is 18 11/16.

I want to replace it with this sink:

According to the Spec Sheet the outside diameter of the new sink is 19". Do you think it will fit?

Your biggest issue will be getting the old out with tearing up the Formica. I would replace the sink and top with a cultured marble one piece.

I see. I am doing this for my parents and they are on a budget so would rather not replace the top if at all possible. If I was able to get the metal ring off carefully without damaging the Formica, do you think the sink would fit in that opening? Thank you

Try to drive a putty knife under it to loosen it if it is stuck.
I would transition to plastic and use a new plastic trap.
Most codes don’t allow the corrugated flexible part.
The old trap is copper with yellow brass fittings. If you collect scrap then scrap it. If not leave it obvious and someone will grab it. Might as well be put in the stream of recyclables.
