After seeing the massive destruction that a lightning bolt can do the thought (question really) popped into my mind of what happens when lightning strikes the electrical system of a house using the rebar in the footing as the ground (concrete encase electrode).

Has anyone ever heard of a lighting strike cracking the footing of a house using a CEE (maybe no one knows cause it's hidden from view).

Similar question - should lightning rods on a house be grounded to the same CEE as the houses electrical system or separate ground rods?

Odd questions I guess but it's Friday.

i would use ground rods .your trying to send the lightning to the ground not your panel its just safer with ground rods

I have a master electrician friend who's seen a slab blown to pieces by lightning getting into the rebar. He is definitely not a fan of that particular code requirement.
