I'm installing double pocket doors and would like to install a 3 switch box next to the opening of the wall. If your familiar with pocket doors, these are walls that contain 2x4 split studs (to accommodate the doors). Each split stud is 3/4" deep and then I have the thickness of the drywall to add to it. I was going to use a double layer of sheetrock to get a decent depth to fit a box that won't impact the door inside the wall but I don't think even that will work. I was thinking of using a 1900 box (not sure how to use and/or attach) and then reduce the number of switches for the room down to 2. I could run the wiring down a 3/4" conduit to prevent interference there too.

I'm going nuts trying to figure this out and making it work...safely, too. Any and all help, ideas, and suggestions are more than welcome.

I found the thread. It looks like the 1900 box idea will be a viable option.

Glad you found the thread. I feel your pain about working with pocket doors - every interior door in my house is a pocket door.

not going to work. the 1x4 on the door frame are running horizontal. you can't cut them to run conduit down from the ceiling. this would be near impossible even in new construction and meet code. if you are in an existing situation, forget it. go to the nearest wall without a pocket door and place switches as close as possible. put a small night light in a plug close by to help with the extra couple of steps to get to the switches when the room is dark. the other side of the pocket door is where the switches should be anyway, not on the sliding side.

I've never seen a pocket door with enough room to fit a 1 1/2" box unless the entire wall was made wider with furring strips.

You would have to frame the pocket door with 2x4's on edge, that's how i usually see it done around here...

Not necessarily. Depends on the brand of the pocket door kit. I have no such 1x4s running horizontally. I just measured, and with 3/4" drywall, I would have room for a 1-1/2" box. Space can also be gained by using a thinner door.

You could also use Lutrons Pico switches and remote locate the physical switch in a closet or other area of the room.

These remote switches are RF type, and would get surface mounted to the wall, but you can still apply a wall plate, and no one would be wiser.

he stated they were 3/4" thick. that to me is a one by. i've put in maybe 50-75 pocket doors in standard houses over the years and they all came framed with 1 x 4 horizontal to accomodate sheetrock. vertically would allow the sheetrock to bow.
