Light switch that powers an external circuit of sorts?

Hello all!

I'm currently building a nightstand and a hanging bookshelf for over my bed. My plans are to have a light on the hanging bookshelf, and a lamp on the nightstand. However, I thought it would be fun to have a light switch installed into the nightstand to turn on and off both lights. Sadly, I don't even know where to begin. So let me know what you think, and how I can make this work. Thanks in advance!

Mount a 4 inch square junction box on the night stand. Put a switch and a duplex receptacle in it. Have a cord with plug come out of the junction box to plug into the nearest wall receptacle. Plug the lights into the receptacle on the night stand. You can use two junction boxes or one larger junction box for a more elaborate setup say with two switches.
