Leveling a sloping backyard

I have a yard that slopes up away from the house. I like to level a 24'wX12'D area. To make it level 12 feet from the house, I need to go down 18 inches. I am afraid that me side fence may not be solid after digging 18 inches deep. How can I level my yard and keep the fence strong?

Ayuh,.... Level, next to the buildin' is a Bad thing,...

Creates all sortsa problems...
