He specified LED can lights. Ive only seen them come as a total unit not as an empty housing that you can install lamps into.

If he means regular recessed housings that will accept incandescent lamps, them he is limited by the rating of the fixture.

I assumed the op was referring to something like the cree cr-6.

I believe it depends on the maximum wattage rating of the cans you're using -- not the bulb you ultimately choose.

If you want to follow "best practice" it should be based on
the maximum rating of the fixture, not the rating of the lamp
used at the time.
so if your fixtures are rated for 100w max
then you can use 18 lights maximum.
100w = 18.
75w = 24.
60w = 30.

remember at some later stage someone could change the lamps
without knowing any better.
thats why you go by fixture rating not lamp rating.
