We have an addition that is sided and we have double hung windows. when the ice was melting from the roof alot of water leaked thru the windows.
we dont know how to begin to look at the problem. The sills were so wet they soaked paper towels. help

You could have multiple issues. There could be ice damming on the roof allowing water to get into the walls and exit around the windows. The second issue could be that the window wasn't properly installed to begin with. There's a multi faceted weatherstripping detail that needs to be installed properly to keep water out.
Was this water issue happening only over where the gutters are installed? Is this the first Winter this has occurred? Are these newly installed windows? How old is the roof?

It is a new building. I am on the 1st floor. It didnt happen to other units above me. Once the ice was knocked off the roof it stopped leaking but there was alot of water what do I do first

Is sooo right, it depends on how the windows were installed, window tape? were the nail fins used on the windows/OR CUT OFF? was sealant used under nailing fins, was there any pan flashing used on bottom and around the outside frame of your Rough Opening? Did any one follow the directions of the MFGr, step by step? Tyvke or house wrap used? If none of the items mentioned used, then it's an install issue... but Like Ron said it could be issues with the gutters/fasica or drip cap/ if the gutters where clogged. Water can back up in the gutters and actually water can intruded in the walls....good luck...I'm not a contractor, but usually it's come down too an install issue

It might help if you described the building you live in. How many floors? Type of roof? Sloped or flat? Shingled or not?
If the water stopped after the snow/ice was removed from the roof, it would seam to be a roof issue. Was the water coming in during a rain storm? If not, it's definitely a roof issue.
Is this a condo or co-op? Is there a building association? Do you pay common charges? If so, the building association should be figuring this out.
Just because your neighbors over you sustained no damage, doesn't mean it's not from the roof. Water can take odd routes to the ground.

I live in a brick apt 3floors with a new addition that is sided. I dont seem to get water when it rains and not after we knocked the ice off the roof. The roof is flat . The roofer came and said everything is fine but who knows? if i brought an expert in would they beable to help or do you need to tear the siding off . How do I find an expert? I live 1 block from Obama in Hyde park

It sounds like there's an issue of ice damming on the roof. There's a good chance water is getting in behind the fascia and running down behind the siding. You probably have weatherstripping issues with your window that allows the water to get in.
Since you don't get water in when it rains, it seems the issue is with the frozen gutters. The rain will hit the roof and flow into the gutters when there is no ice.
I'd have somone check behind the siding for wetness and do a moisture test over your windows.

I wish someone was in charge. Its just me and the developer who knows less than i do and when something goes wrong the workers blame each other. so its best i find my own answers to guide them jean
