Most of that old lead is inch and a quarter, inch and a half. Really need a picture of what you are talking about, due to most lead piping was used for kitchen vent, waste drains for bath & kitchen sinks.

Post a picture of what you are talking about. As for the answer, majority of the time, PVC. Cast Iron work is becoming a lost art.

They will both last you another 20 yrs. at least. CI is quieter but not readily available at hardware stores for the DIY'er. You can find the plastic parts easily and most residential plumbing is now done in plastic.
Adapting to the existing CI hub will be your biggest hurdle.
