One area of my lawn ( perhaps 50 sq feet ) has been taken over by grass that I don't particularly like. My plan is to remove that grass with a shovel, then spray the area with Total Wipeout to make sure it does not come back, then lay the sod overtop ( of course raking the soil to break it up and perhaps some starter fertilizer, etc )
My question is - How long should I wait from the time I spray the herbicide to when I can lay the sod overtop ?
Or perhaps I should be spraying the herbicide on the grass before I remove it, but I thought spraying the area after mechanically removing the grass best ensures that I get rid of all of it.

I'd kill it before you remove, that way it you miss any roots, shoots, stems when you remove you will be less likely to have a reoccurrence.

Also, do not do this (sod patch) unless you are ready to undertake the watering required.

We did a similar type of repair, and are adhering to the grass-farm's recommended watering - and we are supplementing on very HOT days. Right now, we are in the middle of Month Two, but it has been hot and dry so I am back to watering it every other day. We were told by the grass farm, that even after three months (!) sod can still die off without enough water. We selected KBG for it's look and our sunny location, and because it has a better chance of recovering if it does start to 'brown out'.

Month One:
- 1 week of watering everyday - sod should be soggy - avoid walking on it,
- 1 week of watering every other day,
- 1 week of watering every second day,
- 1 week of watering every third day.

Month Two:
- Watering twice a week and as needed.

Month Three:
- Water once a week and as needed.

BTW - my 0.02$: don't buy more sod than you can lay in 4 hours. Lay sod in the coolest time of the day. Pre-water soil under sod so it doesn't just suck up all the water you're putting down for the sod. Minimize seams along walkways or exposed edges. Make sure that your seam where the new sod meets the old grass gets plenty of water and doesn't dry out. Buy a hose timer and a dedicated sprinkler - set it up and let it do the work - then you never 'forget a day'.

Once you remove the grass you don't like, just put the sod down. You don't need to spray any type of grass killer.
