I rebuilt the diaphragm carb to my B&S engine (Poulan push mower), cleaned gas tank, mounted all together cuz the mower wouldnt start at all. Then, pumped the rubber buttun 2-3 X, and mower started with one pull! Thing is, I couldnt get the revs down at all! Scared me.

I inspected the throttle cable and even re mounted it in the original position. I could easily see the crimp indentation.

Any tips on what I did wrong and what to check next?

I would first recheck the cable position, possibly even loosen it, and try it in a different position, just to be sure. Once you are sure that is not the problem, I would remove the carburetor, carefully inspect the gasket for any damage, and the mating surfaces on both the engine and carburetor, to make sure that none of the old gasket is stuck to them, and remount it; it sounds like you may have an air leak there.

Forgot to mention it, but if you do have cooked on remnants of the old gasket on the mating surfaces, be careful not to gouge the metal when you remove them, and never pry them apart with a screw driver or other tool. If they don't separate easily once you remove the bolts, just tap on the components lightly, preferrably with a rubber or rawhide hammer, but, othewise, a piece of scrap wood between them and ball peen or claw hammer will work.

Yes, not looking at it, I missed that, but the governor linkage could very well be the culprit as well; you should be able to see in the paint where it was positioned. By the way, you do have everything back together, including the air cleaner, right? And the little tube that vents the crankcase? See, a few things to do without even having to get dirty again!

Planning to tackle it this morning, but yes, I believe I put it back as original. L will double check linkage/governor. No gouging. Im pretty good with engines on that......

You're welcome, but the credit goes to Tom. He pegged it, and I only added that you should be able to tell where it belonged by the paint (at least that is often the case). Anyway, good to hear; now get the yard mowed!
