Large Pergola leaning, how can I best support?

2233 Views 15 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Nealtw
I inherited a large covered pergola with a significant lean. It provides necessary privacy from the two-story neighbour. I'm wondering how I can best correct the lean and support the whole thing. The 6x6 in bottom pic shows how far it's leaning.

Does the fence have a matching lean?
Yes. they appear to be learning the same amount. The fence posts are mostly rotted and will need replacing

Are you some where that frost would effect the lumps of concrete around the open posts?
So the lumps of concrete move with frost, when they go up, they never go down.
You have rotting posts in the fence.
Do you have access to the other side of the fence?
Haven't met the new neighbour, but yes, I could likely have access.

Can you get a picture or two of the fence from the other side.
The beam over the outer posts, does it have joins over the posts or just random joins
can't get a picture as it's covered in plants but i can see from my side that sitting on the fence is a type of rim joist which the 4x4s in the roof are nailed to. They don't join over the posts.

yes, that's exactly what it looks like. there are 6 of those fence 'sections' across the fence side of the pergola.

How many 2x4s between the posts? Can you see the nail pattern.

There are two 2x4s per section

I have some ideas, not suggestions as such, just cheap talk.

What if you installed 6x6 posts on your side, put a block between the 2x4 on the other side, cut the old post and lag the fence to the new post from the other side?

With that you could put matching new posts under the beam.

The tricky part is doing it, while moving it back to straight with out loosing the whole thing.
