I need some advice on how to paint these. The gates are new raw mild steel. My options are to use on oil based rustoleum primer, followed by industrial rustoleum gloss. Or, a local body shop will epoxy coat them, them apply an enamel as a finish coat. Which will give the longest lasting results? Is there really that big of a difference? I'm in mid-Missouri by the way.

Thanks in advance guys

I believe the body shop will give you the better, longer lasting result.

Generally speaking, you want to use oil based primer and latex paint on steel - oil based primer to inhibit rust and latex paint because it will flex a little more than oil based as the metal shrinks and expands with different temperatures. The body shop, though, just has access to better stuff than a typical DIY job will provide.

I hadn't thought of using latex for the flexibility, thanks! The body shop wants $350, I can paint them for about $100. I guess I'm wondering if the body shop results will be 250 dollars better? Are we talking 8 years if I do it vs. 10 if they do, or is it more like 2 years vs 10 years?
