I've heard that deer in this area (northern NJ) eat emerald arborvitae. I that true?

Deer candy...

Here in eastern Minnesota we call arborvitae "deer candy". For a taller screen, over 4-5 ft, that the deer won't eat I would suggest spruce trees. Deer do like white pine for sure. Trees can be costly for larger trees but will create a nice screen over time.
