Do I connect the white or black wire to the ribbed side of a cord with a plug when changing a hard wired lamp to a plug lamp?

Yes I want to hang them on the wall using a plug, I do not own the house on I can not hard wire them.

Your going to need some sort of electrical box for the wire connections, the purpose of a box is to contain a fire. You could use a white wiremold box.

The ribbed conductor is marked to be the neutral. Connects to the wider blade of your plug.
