Looking for some suggestions for how to go about updating our kitchen. Our house is about 100 years old, and the kitchen still has the original horsehair plaster. The previous owners re-did the kitchen about 25-30 years ago and glued large sheets of laminate from the counters to the cabinets (and even behind the cabinets) on large portions of THREE walls.
We understand that, ideally, the best thing to do would be to remove the cabinets and take off the laminate. However, based on our experience just trying to hang pictures on the old horsehair plaster, we have a feeling that all three walls would simply crumble if we did that. Not having the money or time to completely gut the kitchen, we are trying to brainstorm ways to cover up the laminate while still making the kitchen look good. Any thoughts??
(We are thinking that we can budget enough to paint the cabinets, do something about the laminate walls, and replace the floor ourselves, as well as pay someone else to put in new counter tops. Since we won't be able to replace the cabinets, we hope to avoid taking them down because we may have trouble getting them back up due to the old plaster.)
