Hi All- What is the best way to attach a 3 1/2" wide LAM beam to the top of 6x6 posts for a deck roof? I plan to wrap the beam with aluminum to dress it up. I was thinking of notching the posts but then it would not be a nice flush fit for the aluminum to wrap the beam.

Roof will be shed type roof supported with 2 6x6 posts about 15' apart.

Thoughts? Thanks for the help!

I would put a 2" deep notch in the 6x6 post, and bolt the beam in place. 1.5" of the beam will protrude beyond the post, making it slightly easier to wrap with aluminum.
Simpson makes commercial post and beam caps, but my solution is cheaper and easier to obtain.

We just set them on top with a 3x12 flat strap.
If the post is treated, protect it from the aluminum. The copper in the treatment will eat aluminum.
