perhaps setting a 3x3' piece of sheet plywood, osb, etc. and putting a heavy weight on it for a few days might help?

go grab Gramdma's old steamer trunk out of the attic?
at least you won't have to look at a toolbox on the floor on a piece of plywood.... lol
leave it there a few weeks and see if it helps?
tell the kids whatever they do, don't stand on that piece of plywood over there?
