We're starting a kitchen remodel (floors, cabinets, counter tops) and want to pay as we go. Meaning can't do it all at once.

Linoleum floor is in worse shape than cabinets and we wish to replace with tile.

Any issue with doing the tile floor first and then replacing cabinets later on?

Only issue I can think of is might have to replace a few tiles that border on new cabinets if we don't replace with exact size.

Before thinking about tile you need to figure out if that floor will even support it.
Size of joist, spans, joist spacing, thickness and what type subfloor there is.
Are you suggesting tiling up to the cabinets you have now then replace them later, if so not a great plan, if there's a dishwasher involved it's even worst.

We're on a concrete slab. No subfloor.

The idea was to tile up to existing cabinets/walls. And yes we own a dishwasher and it's current adjusted to it's highest setting to fit under counter top. So I have room if needed.

So what are the issues? Pros/cons.

You have to make sure there is enough clearance to allow the dishwasher to be removed and replaced at a later date.

You want the floor under the dishwasher to be at the same height as the finished floor in front of it.

Otherwise, if you tile right up to the base of the dishwasher, you may not be able to get it out.

It goes Plumbing, electric, hvac, walls, prep & finish, floor you do Plywood that is Subfloor grade (Lowe's marks it as roofing) for where the bases go, so that when you are done with the finish floor, no one would think that there is Plywood or OSB where the cabinets are.

When you move in the appliances after all of the cabinets and counters are in, put down LuAnn secrions to protect the floor.

THIS. I replaced my dishwasher a few years ago and it was real pain in the rear because of the lack of tile under it. Had this inch or so lip to get up and over.

Floor should almost always be last, but do consider things like dishwasher height, as already stated. During remodeling there's always the risk of something falling or dropping or spilling, and you could gouge or tear the new flooring. Keep the old flooring in and you don't have to worry about spilling paint, dropping heavy stuff, etc.

This is an age old argument and comes up every so many months on here. I would recommend you wait and save up some more money so you can do your project right. I've done a ton of kitchen remodels and whenever I do a tile floor, I remove all the cabinets, old flooring, etc, and do the tile floor first. I tile wall to wall and then set the cabinets and appliances on top of the tile. Most new cabinets have a deeper toe kick space under the base units. So if you tile first to the old cabinets, AND you just install new cabinets to the exact same layout, you'll more than likely end up with a 1" gap between your toe kicks and the tile. Have fun with that. The labor I save by not having to cut around cabinets more than makes up for a couple extra boxes of tile that it takes to go wall to wall. Plus it gives you the option of making changes in your layout to come up with a more like able kitchen.
